Describe the
changing social situation between Jim and Antonia as she becomes a “hired girl”
in town.
After Antonia’s father passed away, Jim and Antonia became very
separate. Antonia had to care of
her family, so there was no time for Jim in Antonia’s mind. After Antonia came
to black hawk to work for the Harlings, the interaction between Jim and
Antonia was improving, but it was nothing like how they were on the farm.
There’s even a part in book ii were Jim envies Charlie because Antonia’s
developing feelings for him. This tells us that Jim is very appreciative of
Antonia. It seems like the Harlings are keeping Jim and Antonia separate from
each other, for example, instead of spending time with Jim, Antonia and Jim
spend most of their time playing with the children, but
we don’t see much interaction between them. It’s awkward.
